New Delhi: India and Israel have signed a joint statement to establish a Center of Water Technology at IIT Madras in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The agreement, a collaboration between the Embassy of Israel, IIT Madras, and the AMRUT mission of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, marks a significant step in addressing the challenges of water management in India.
The newly established center aims to serve as a hub for innovation, research, and capacity-building in water technologies, with a particular focus on sustainable solutions for urban water supply. Israel, recognized as a global leader in Integrated Water Resources Management, brings its expertise to this partnership. To initiate the collaboration, a capacity-building course on "24/7 Water Supply in Urban Areas" was held at IIT Madras from August 5 to 8, 2024. The course set the stage for future projects and research initiatives at the center.
Naor Gilon, Ambassador of Israel to India, emphasized the importance of the collaboration, stating, "The establishment of the Center of Water Technology at IIT Madras is a testament to our strong partnership, and we look forward to working together to develop innovative solutions that will benefit millions in India." The Embassy of Israel in India also reaffirmed its commitment to fostering cooperation in water technology and management. The center is expected to play a key role in India's efforts to achieve a sustainable water supply for all.
The Center of Water Technology (CoWT) will facilitate the exchange of technology, scientific information, and expertise between the two nations. It will also focus on addressing challenges in drinking water and sewerage management while exploring new areas of intervention. Both governments intend to identify specific projects related to integrated water resources management, urban water supply, non-revenue water, sewage recycling, IoT solutions, online monitoring, water harvesting, smart data management, and AI. These projects aim to demonstrate the most advanced technologies in the field, further strengthening the partnership between India and Israel.
