​India has reached an unprecedented milestone in coal and lignite production, surpassing 1 billion tonnes in the fiscal year 2023-24, announced Union Coal and Mines Minister Pralhad Joshi on Monday. This marks a significant increase from the previous fiscal year, where the total output stood at 937 million tonnes.

"Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have accomplished a remarkable feat by exceeding 1 billion tonnes in coal and lignite production," stated Joshi proudly.

This achievement signifies a historic moment for India, ensuring greater energy security for the nation. Joshi emphasized that sustained efforts to boost domestic coal production will prevent future shortages.

Expressing gratitude, Joshi thanked sector officials, coal workers, and private miners for their dedication and hard work in achieving this milestone. He highlighted a 70 percent growth in production over the past decade.

India's next objective is to eliminate coal imports by 2025-26, Joshi revealed. He noted a decline in imported coal for blending purposes in the current fiscal year compared to the previous one.

In FY24, coal imports for blending amounted to approximately 22.20 million tonnes, a decrease from 30.80 million tonnes in FY23. Joshi emphasized that reducing coal imports has resulted in savings of Rs 82,264 crore in just one year.
