India has decided to extend its anti-subsidy duty on a Chinese chemical used in pesticides for an additional five years. This move is aimed at protecting domestic manufacturers from unfair competition. The extension follows a recommendation from the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), which has advocated for continuing the duty on imports of 'Atrazine Technical' from China.

The finance ministry announced that the countervailing duty, which can reach up to 11.94%, will be in effect for five years, unless revoked, superseded, or amended sooner.

The DGTR's investigation found that the existing duties have been beneficial, allowing more Indian producers to enter the market and helping the domestic industry expand its capacity. The previous duties, imposed in September 2019, were introduced to counteract the negative impact of subsidized exports on Indian manufacturers.

Subsidized exports can lower the price of imported products, affecting the margins and profitability of local manufacturers. In accordance with global trade regulations, countries are permitted to impose such countervailing duties to protect their domestic industries.

In addition to the anti-subsidy duty on Atrazine Technical, India has also extended similar duties on imports of welded stainless steel pipes and tubes from China and Vietnam for five years.

In India, welded stainless steel pipes and tubes are integral to numerous industries because of their exceptional durability and resistance to corrosion. These components are essential in the construction sector, where they are used to create robust building structures, support frameworks, and handrails. Their reliability and strength also make them a preferred choice in the automotive industry, where they are employed in exhaust systems, fuel lines, and other critical parts that require high performance under demanding conditions. Additionally, their versatility extends to various other applications, including infrastructure projects and industrial machinery, highlighting their importance across different sectors.
