In a major step towards enhancing financial collaboration, India has launched the Rupay card in the Maldives. This initiative follows recent discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

The introduction of the Indian payment system is expected to improve convenience for both tourists and residents in the Maldives, facilitating smoother transactions across various sectors. Prime Minister Modi and President Muizzu engaged in extensive talks on Monday to repair and enhance the relationship between their nations. This marks Muizzu's first official visit to India since taking office in November last year, following a period of strained relations stemming from political differences, including Muizzu's earlier anti-India stance.

The Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, shared on X, "Taking forward India-Maldives special ties! PM Narendra Modi warmly received President Mohamed Muizzu of Maldives as the latter arrived at Hyderabad House. Extensive discussions on India-Maldives bilateral relations lie ahead."

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi emphasized India's commitment to supporting the Maldives, reinforcing the importance of their long-standing relationship. He stated, "Relations between India and Maldives are centuries old. India is the closest neighbor and a close friend of Maldives. The Maldives also has an important place in our 'Neighbourhood First' policy and 'SAGAR' Vision."

This development underscores the efforts of both countries to enhance cooperation and strengthen their ties for mutual benefit.
