Assam: On Saturday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stated that India is a great supporter of democratic values and governance and that it participates actively and transparently in the Commonwealth partnership.

India's strength is its ability to pass power smoothly. Birla's comments come a day after supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump rushed and vandalised Capitol Hill in an attempt to stop the House from certifying President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election.

"The Constitution's basic idea was to make governance more people-centered. "Our strength is the peaceful succession of power through 17 general elections and over 300 Assembly elections," Birla remarked, adding, "India has been among the world's strongest and most empowered democracies since Independence."

The Lok Sabha Speaker was speaking at the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies' Outreach and Familiarization Program for Panchayati Raj Institutions in Dehradun.

Birla believes that if Panchayati Raj institutions are handled efficiently and responsibly, societal change may be achieved. "The essence of India survives in its countryside," he said, quoting Mahatma Gandhi, and praising the Uttarakhand administration for increasing women's reservation.
