NEW DELHI: As part of the 'One Sun, One World, One Grid' initiative to aid Maldives' energy transition, India and the Maldives proposed on Tuesday to establish transmission interconnection for renewable power transfer. A draught agreement for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Transmission Interconnection is being prepared, under which an Indian technical team will visit the Maldives to assess its technical viability.

Following that, a complete project report in Male (the Maldives' capital) would be created in collaboration with Indian and Maldives agencies, including an undersea cable route survey and network augmentation.

This was announced in New Delhi when Aminath Shauna, the Maldives' Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology, met with R.K. Singh, India's Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy. By shifting from fossil fuels to greener options, such as renewable energy, the energy transition programme is a vital step in mitigating climate change.

Singh praised the Maldives government's commitment to achieving a net-zero carbon target by 2030. Aside from the transmission interconnection agreement under 'One Sun, One World, One Grid,' the two presidents also suggested an energy cooperation agreement.

Maldives' Environment Minister met with Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, who praised Maldives' climate initiatives. "India and the Maldives should join hands to fight climate change to assure climate justice to all, especially to developing nations," Yadav said, emphasising the significance of actual adaptation action in combating climate change.

Both sides agreed to expand continuing bilateral cooperation between India and the Maldives, not just to combat environmental challenges and climate change, but also to explore ways to further cooperation in order to achieve deeper economic integration.
