You have hardly heard of such a temple where the whale is worshipped. But a similar temple exists in Magod Dungri village of Valsad tehsil in Gujarat. This temple is known as 'Matsya Mataji'. This 300-year-old temple was built by fishermen from the village itself. You will be surprised to know that before going to sea for fishing, all the fishermen who live here first bow to the temple, then they go further from there.

There is a belief behind the construction of this temple, according to which, 300 years ago, a resident of the village Prabhu Tandel had a dream that a huge fish has come on the beach. He had also seen in the dream that the fish arrives on the coast wearing the form of a goddess but it dies on arrival. Later, when the villagers and Prabhu Tandel went there and saw that a big fish had died. The villagers were surprised to see the huge size of that fish. It was a whale fish. When Lord Tandel told the whole thing of his dream to the people, people considered that whale fish to be the incarnation of the Goddess and a temple was built in the name of Matsya Mata.

In this case, the villagers say that before the construction of that temple, Lord Tandel had pressed the whale fish under the land on the banks of the sea itself. When the construction of the temple was completed, he took out the bones of the whale and kept it in the temple. It is said that some people opposed the faith of Lord Tandel and did not participate in any work related to the temple, because they did not believe in the Matsya form of Goddess. It is also said that after that all the villagers had to suffer its severe consequences.
