India and Myanmar ink pact to enhance defense cooperation

NEW DELHI: India and Myanmar signed a Defence Cooperation Agreement on Monday to further their military ties and strategic security. The agreement was signed after detailed talks between Myanmar Commander-in-Chief Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and Minister of State for Defence Sripad Yeso Naik.

The delegation accompanied by Hailing was accompanied by high-level Myanmar officials. He also met IAF Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat and Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh. The talks are aimed at promoting defense cooperation between India and Myanmar, including further strengthening the training being imparted to defense personnel.

During the visit, the two countries also discussed enhancing maritime security cooperation. The Defence Ministry said in a statement that a Letter of Understanding (MoU) for Defence Cooperation was signed after the talks. After signing the defense agreement, Myanmar's Commander-in-Chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing met prime minister Narendra Modi. During the visit, Haling invited Prime Minister Modi to visit Myanmar.

He also wished the BJP a victory in the Lok Sabha elections. Haling said, the relations between the two neighbors are deep and strong and have been better in the past few years. He expressed the hope that the defense agreement will further strengthen the relationship. Prime Minister Modi also recalled the honor he received during his last visit to Myanmar.

He also called on the two countries to work together for economic and development in the fields of cooperation, water, and military cooperation in the region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his resolve to work shoulder to shoulder with Myanmar in the future.
