India-Nepal ties to be strengthened, rail services to start soon between two countries

New Delhi: India and Nepal have signed an exchange letter allowing private units to enter the rail freight segment to enhance efficiency and competitive cost capacity. This is very important in terms of efforts to enhance regional connectivity under India's 'Neighbour First' policy.

The Indian Embassy in Nepal said in a statement that the governments of the two countries signed an exchange letter for the Indo-Nepal Rail Service Agreement (RSA) through video conference. The meeting was led by Sanjay Kumar Mohanty, Member (Operations and Business Development), Ministry of Railways, while Dinesh Bhattarai, Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Supplies, Nepal, on behalf of Nepali side, attended the meeting.

The statement said the agreement will allow use of indian railways network to ferry container trains, vehicle carrying trains and special mamltrains from India and Nepal or Indian ports to Nepal from India to Nepal. Wagons of Nepal Railway Company will also be allowed to carry goods loaded for Nepal through Indian Railway Network. The agreement has been described as another milestone in India's efforts to enhance regional rail connectivity.
