India now home to 75,000 startups, says Piyush Goyal Goyal

NEW DELHI:  Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on 3 August that 'India in its 75th year of independence is now home to 75,000 startups''. 

Taking to Twitter, Goyal wrote, “These numbers tell the power of a vision. A vision to witness innovation & enterprise drive growth. India is now home to 75,000 startups in the seventy-fifth  year of Independence and this is only the beginning."

As India celebrates Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has recognized more than 75,000 startups.

According to the government, innovation, zeal, and entrepreneurial spirit continue to fuel the Indian startup ecosystem.
Of the total recognised startups, about 12 percent are in the IT sector, 9 percent are in the healthcare and life sciences sector, 7 percent are in the education sector, 5 percent are in the professional and business services sector, and 5 percent are in the agricultural sector.

"Over the last six years, the Indian startup ecosystem has generated an astonishing 7.46 lakh employment, a rise of 110 percent annually. The ministry added in a statement that the fact that about  49 percent of our startups come from Tier II and Tier III today is proof of the youth of our nation's enormous potential.
