India has submitted its claim to host the AFC Asian Cup football tournament to be held in 2027. An official of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed this on Sunday. If India gets a hosting, this will be the first occasion when it will host the biggest sporting event of the continent. AIFF general secretary Kushal Das told PTI, 'We have already presented our claim to the AFC (Asian Football Confederation). All that is needed now. In view of the outbreak of the Kovid-19 epidemic, recently, the AFC had extended the deadline for submission of claims from 31 March to 30 June.

The AFC is likely to announce the host country early next year. Apart from India, so far Saudi Arabia has expressed its desire to host the Asian Cup in 2027. Saudi Arabia has won the tournament three times but has never hosted it. India had earlier claimed to host the 2023 AFC Asia Cup but withdrew from the race in October 2018. Later, Thailand and South Korea also withdrew, after which China got the hosting.
