New Delhi: India and Russia have decided to join hands with Central Asian republics bordering Afghanistan to prevent the spread of Islamic fundamentalism and jihad from the Taliban-ruled Kabul terror group. On Wednesday, Ajit Doval and Nikolai Patrushev discussed the security of the Central Asian Republics in an India-Russia NSA level consultation. The meeting was attended by intelligence chiefs from both sides.

According to people aware of the developments, there are strong indications that Turkey and Pakistan are trying to gain a foothold in these republics through NGOs and providing technical assistance in Ankara's efforts to Islamise. The Central Asian Republics follow Islam but are not like the Taliban. It is believed that the Islamic Emirate of Taliban-ruled Afghanistan could be used to raise life under Sharia, with the support of Turkey and Pakistan, in its mission to spread radical Islam. The Al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) has active cadres in Afghanistan and has a huge influence in Uzbekistan's Fargana Valley.

The Doval-Patrushev meeting deliberated on the security of the Central Asian republics, Russian negotiators said, as the situation in these republics was under control. But the threat will only increase when the Taliban, under the guidance of Pakistan, becomes ambitious to spread their cult in the Amu Darya.
