NEW DELHI: On February 7, India sent the first shipment of humanitarian aid and a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) rescue team to Turkey, the scene of a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that has left over 4,300 people dead and thousands more injured.

Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for the External Affairs Ministry, tweeted: "India's Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) capabilites in action."

Along with the NDRF Search & Rescue Team, specially trained dog squads, medical supplies, drilling machines, and other necessary equipment, the first shipment of earthquake relief materials departs for Turkey.

Early on Tuesday morning, an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft flew the 51-person NDRF delegation to Turkey from the Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad. The delegation was led by Deputy Commandant Deepak Talwar.
The IAF added that "an IAF C-17 got airborne for Turkey" in another tweet. NDRFHQ's search and rescue squads are bearing.

This aircraft is a part of a bigger humanitarian mission that the IAF and other Indian organisations will carry out. The development on Tuesday came a day after the Center declared that two NDRF teas, each with 100 people and specially trained dog squads, were prepared to be flown to Turkey for search and rescue missions.

The government stated that medical teams with qualified doctors and paramedics as well as necessary medications were also prepared.

The delivery of relief supplies will be coordinated with the Turkish authorities, the Indian Embassy in Ankara, and the Indian Consulate General in Istanbul.

The death toll in Turkey was 2,921 as of Tuesday morning, while it rose to 1,451 in Syria.
