NEW DELHI: In a major development, India and Tanzania have solidified their relationship by advancing it to the status of a strategic partnership. This momentous decision came about as a result of extensive discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, during which the leaders also established a comprehensive five-year roadmap aimed at significantly enhancing their defense cooperation.
The culmination of these talks witnessed the signing of six pivotal memorandums of understanding (MoUs), encompassing various critical sectors. These agreements lay the groundwork for cooperation in digital technology, cultural exchanges, sports, maritime industries, and the sharing of white shipping information.
Addressing the media after their discussions, Prime Minister Modi revealed that both nations were actively exploring the possibility of an agreement that would facilitate trade conducted in local currencies. He emphasized that India and Tanzania hold immense significance as trade and investment partners.
"Today marks a historic juncture in the longstanding relationship between India and Tanzania. We are now cementing our deep-rooted friendship with the establishment of a strategic partnership," Prime Minister Modi proclaimed in the presence of President Hassan.
Highlighting the defense arena, Modi announced the formulation of a comprehensive five-year roadmap that would usher in fresh dimensions of collaboration. This roadmap is set to encompass military training, maritime endeavors, and advancements in the defense industry.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister underscored the shared belief between India and Tanzania that terrorism constitutes the gravest security threat to humanity. Both nations have concurred on intensifying their collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts.
PM Modi also lauded Tanzania's crucial role in the Indo-Pacific region, signifying the nation's growing importance in the broader geopolitical landscape.
Earlier in the day, President Hassan was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Her visit to Delhi, spanning four days, signifies the strengthening of bilateral ties between India and Tanzania.
