India to host SCO Heads of Government meet; PM Modi to skip

New Delhi: India will host the Heads of Government Meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) of eight countries today, but PM Narendra Modi will not participate in this meeting. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu will preside over the meeting. According to the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister of six countries will participate in the virtual conference.

Top leaders attending the meeting include Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang and Russian PM Mikhail Mishin, the PMs of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. Pak PM Imran Khan will also not participate in the meeting. The SCO currently consists of eight member countries (China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan), with four observer countries seeking full membership (Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia). Let it be said that this is the first time that the Summit meeting will be held under the leadership of India after attaining full membership of the organization in 2017.

PM SCO member countries of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan will participate in the meeting. Pakistan will be represented by the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs. In addition to the SCO member countries, four observer countries of the SCO will also participate, including the President of Afghanistan, the first Vice President of Iran, the Prime Minister of Belarus and the Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia.
