Mizoram fire: Fire blazing for 32 hours reaches cities, Air Force engaged in relief work

Aizwal: The forests of Lunglei city of Mizoram have been on fire for several hours and continue to spread. Mizoram CM Jormathanga on Sunday sought help from the central government to douse the fire after which the Indian Air Force has deployed two helicopters. The Defence Ministry's Shillong PRO said that at the request of the state government, the Air Force is deploying two of its helicopters to douse the flames in Lunglei and its surrounding areas. Chief Minister Jormathanga then thanked the INDIAN Air Force and the Central Government.

The fire started at 7 am on April 24 in Lunglei. Lunglei is the capital of the southern Mizoram district. The fire was mainly spread to those forests around the city where there is not much population. But now it is spreading to more than 10 village council areas within the city. Fire in some areas such as Jotlang, Serken, Chanmari reached some buildings. However, there has been no loss of life due to the fire so far.

Forest officials, firemen, and local volunteers are also constantly trying to douse the fire. Some people have been seriously injured. The efforts are continuing at many places in Lunglei, but the fire could not be extinguished even after more than 32 hours of operation. Besides locals and firemen, Assam Rifles and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel are also engaged in extinguishing the fire.
