Srinivas Rao Preston Kulkarni the Indian-American former diplomat has lost the congressional race to his Republican rival Troy Nehls. The serious battle in Texas' 22nd district, one of the most ethnically and racially diverse area in the US elected the Republican. Nehls secured 52% of the votes numbering to 204,537, while Kulkarni got 44% numbers to 175,738 votes in the November 3 election.

The 41-year-old Louisiana-born Kulkarni would have become the first Asian-American ever to serve in the Texas congressional delegation if elected. Kulkarni was a former diplomat served in Iraq, Russia, Israel and Taiwan. He had secured an easy victory in the Democratic primary for Texas' 22nd Congressional district against former Pearland city council member Derrick Reed and attorney Nyanza Davis Moore easily. Previously, in 2018 Kulkarni lost a congressional race in the same district to incumbent Congressman Pete Olson narrowly.

Kulkarni is the son of Indian novelist and academic Venkatesh Kulkarni, who immigrated to America in 1969, and a white mother. On the other hand following his victory, Nehls, 52, a popular sheriff and military veteran endorsed by President Donald Trump, tweeted, "This was truly a great win. I look forward to representing our district in Congress and keeping my promise to be OUR voice".
