Srinagar: The Indian Army, in partnership with the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP), has launched a significant initiative to bolster local security by training Village Defence Guards (VDGs). This program aims to equip civilians with the necessary skills to defend their villages against terrorist threats, thereby strengthening the region's security infrastructure.
Currently, around 600 civilians are undergoing rigorous training in operating automatic rifles, conducting squad post drills, and implementing minor tactical operations to safeguard their communities. The training is being carried out at the unit level near their villages, allowing the VDGs to effectively apply their newly acquired skills in practical situations.
The training program, designed by the Indian Army, involves a minimum of three days of instruction for each VDG unit. Expert guidance is provided by instructors and training aids from the Corps Battle School in Sarol, ensuring high-quality training. This initiative, requested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, has already made notable progress.
Additionally, self-loading rifles (SLRs) are being distributed to the VDGs through a collaborative effort between the Army's Ordnance Depots and the JKP. These rifles are an essential part of the VDGs' equipment, enhancing their ability to protect their villages.
So far, approximately 500 individuals have been trained in the Rajouri area, with another 85-90 trained in the Doda and Kishtwar regions. This initiative reflects the Indian Army's dedication to protecting the lives of civilians in Jammu and Kashmir.
