NEW DELHI: The Defence Ministry has given the green light to a proposal worth Rs 2,800 crore for acquiring around 6,400 rockets intended for the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems. This significant decision marks a major advancement for the Indian Army.

Approval for Two Rocket Types

During a recent gathering, the Defence Acquisition Council of the Defence Ministry sanctioned the purchase of two varieties of rockets – Area Denial Munition Type 2 and Type-3, as per information from Defence sources said

Reports indicate that the Indian Army will procure these rockets from domestic sources exclusively. Among the primary contenders are Economic Explosives Limited of Solar Industries and Munitions India Limited, which is one of the ammunition-producing companies formed following the transformation of the earlier Ordnance Factories.

Insight into the Pinaka Weapon System

Named after the bow of the Hindu deity Shiva, the Pinaka weapon system is an indigenous creation developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Notably, it stands as one of the initial Indian military assets exported to foreign nations, including Armenia. Private sector entities like Larsen & Tourbro, Tata Defence, and Economic Explosives have contributed to this project, establishing production lines for the Pinaka system. These systems are being supplied in substantial numbers to the armed forces.

In line with broader plans to modernize artillery, the Army necessitates 22 regiments of the Pinaka MBRL. These regiments comprise launchers equipped with automated gun aiming and positioning systems, along with command posts. Recent trials for the Pinaka rockets were conducted at the Pokhran firing ranges in Rajasthan, reportedly achieving multiple successful test firings.
