In early August 2024, two astronauts from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will start their training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. This significant step is part of a collaborative effort between ISRO and NASA, with the goal of preparing one astronaut for a mission to the International Space Station (ISS) later in the year.

The astronaut selected for this mission will join the Axiom-4 mission, making history as the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS. The two astronauts, chosen from four test pilots of the Indian Air Force, are integral to the Gaganyaan program, which aims to send humans into space.

Their training will include learning about ISS modules and protocols, simulations, emergency drills, and familiarizing themselves with the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft systems used for this mission.

The collaboration was announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States in June 2023. US President Joe Biden highlighted the importance of this partnership for advancing space exploration and strengthening ties between the two nations. The launch of the mission is planned for no earlier than October 2024, with the astronaut expected to spend about two weeks on the ISS.

Dr. S. Somanath, Chairman of ISRO, expressed excitement about the training and mission. "This collaboration is crucial for enhancing India’s human spaceflight capabilities and preparing for future Gaganyaan missions," he said.

The Gaganyaan program aims to launch a crewed spacecraft into Earth's orbit and return it safely, marking India's first human spaceflight mission. Set to take place by 2026, the program includes extensive training at ISRO’s Astronaut Training Centre in Bengaluru. This training involves academic courses, microgravity simulations, and survival training.

Former ISRO Chairman K. Sivan emphasized the mission's importance, stating, “This is a crucial step towards the Gaganyaan program,” which plans to send three astronauts into orbit aboard an Indian spacecraft.

As training begins, the astronauts will undergo rigorous preparation to handle the challenges of space travel, including physical conditioning and technical training. This collaboration between ISRO and NASA is expected to provide valuable insights and experiences for both space agencies.

The Axiom-4 mission highlights the increasing role of private partnerships in space exploration. Axiom Space, in conjunction with NASA, arranges these private astronaut missions to the ISS using SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon capsule.

This mission marks a significant milestone for India and underscores the strong partnership between India and the United States in advancing space exploration. It also reflects the ongoing efforts of both countries to push the boundaries of human achievement in space.

As October 2024 approaches, the global community eagerly anticipates India's first astronaut's journey to the ISS, showcasing the growing international collaboration in space exploration.
