The Indian aviation industry is experiencing a significant surge in air travel demand, prompting airlines to expand their fleets through substantial aircraft orders. IndiGo, a major Indian airline, recently placed an order for 30 A350-900 widebody aircraft from Airbus, valued at between $4 billion and $5 billion. This purchase marks IndiGo's first acquisition of widebody planes, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027. IndiGo also has purchase rights for an additional 70 A350 family aircraft for future needs.
Over the past 15 months, Indian carriers have collectively ordered 1,150 aircraft to meet the growing demand for air travel in the country. Notable orders include the Tata-owned Air India Group's purchase of 470 aircraft—250 from Airbus and 220 from Boeing—in February 2023. This order, valued at approximately $70 billion, includes firm aircraft and options for future acquisition. IndiGo also secured the world's largest aircraft order in June 2023, buying 500 A320neo family planes from Airbus, with deliveries expected between 2030 and 2035.
New airline Akasa Air has also made a significant impact with its January 2024 order for 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, worth about $20 billion at current list prices. This order includes a mix of 737 MAX-8 and 737 MAX-10 variants, accommodating up to 230 passengers per aircraft. In total, the recent orders for 1,590 aircraft showcase the industry's commitment to addressing the rising demand for air travel in India. As the country continues to experience this increase in air travel demand and plans to construct new airports, the volume of aircraft orders may continue to rise in the coming years.
