Indian Football Icon Sunil Chhetri Announces Retirement: Farewell Match Set for June 6th

Indian football icon and captain, Sunil Chhetri, has declared his retirement, set for June 6th, following India's World Cup qualifying match against Kuwait. Chhetri, a stalwart in Indian football, shared the news via social media, marking the end of his international career after the upcoming game against Kuwait.

India currently stands second in Group A of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, trailing behind Qatar, as they prepare for Chhetri's farewell match. Kuwait holds the fourth position in the group standings.

Chhetri, one of the most prolific goal-scorers in active football, ranks third in international goals for his country, trailing only behind Lionel Messi of Argentina and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal.

In a video announcement, Chhetri expressed his decision, stating, "The match against Kuwait will be my last." His journey in international football began on June 12, 2005, with a goal against Pakistan in his debut match.

Over his illustrious career spanning two decades, the 39-year-old striker has amassed numerous accolades, including six AIFF Player of the Year awards, along with receiving the prestigious Padma Shri in 2019 and the Arjuna Award in 2011.
