Thonfu: Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has reached Bhutan on a two-day visit Friday. This is his first foreign visit after taking the charge of the office of the Minister, in which he will hold bilateral talks with his Bhutanese counterpart and meet PM Lotte Tshering. Jaishankar, who assumed office on May 30 as foreign minister, can also discuss with the king of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk.

Upon his arrival, his Bhutanese counterpart Tandi Dorjee arrived at the airport to welcome him. Jaishankar wrote in a tweet that, "it is pleasant to come back to Bhutan. " In New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday that the visit shows the importance India attaches to relations with close friends and neighbouring Bhutan. Bhutan has been a close ally of India and the bilateral relations between the two countries have progressed considerably in the past few years.

The ministry said, "there is a unique and time tested bilateral relationship between India and Bhutan, built on the basis of utmost trust, goodwill and mutual understanding." The ministry said, "during the visit, the two sides Will discuss all aspects of bilateral relations, including financial development and cooperation in hydro-power sector. "
