New Delhi: The central government expressed unhappiness over the continuing speculation and political controversy over the possibility of exporting hydrochloroquine to the US for control of the coronavirus, saying that these drugs were exported only after ensuring adequate availability for the countrymen.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Anurag Shrivastava said while answering questions from press persons, we have seen that a section of the media has tried to create unnecessary controversy on the issue of Corona related drugs. Our first obligation as a responsible government is to ensure adequate storage of medicines for the needs of our people. For this some temporary steps have been taken and export of some drugs has been banned. Srivastava said that in the meantime a comprehensive assessment was made about the potential requirements in different scenarios.

He said that these restrictions have been lifted to a large extent after the availability of medicines is confirmed in all possible emergencies. Directorate General of Foreign Trade has issued notification to lift the ban on 14 drugs. As far as paracetamol and hydroxychloroquine are concerned, it is kept in the licensed category and their demand status will be continuously monitored. However our companies may be allowed to fulfill their export contracts based on their storage status.
