New Delhi: The government has approved the clinical trial of COVAXIN, the country's first coronavirus vaccine being prepared by Bharat Biotech. Soon its trial will start on humans. This is the first vaccine of Coronavirus being prepared in India, which has been allowed to do clinical trials. Bharat Biotech is involved in making the vaccine in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology. It remains to be seen whether this vaccine proves effective in clinical trials.

Currently, more than 100 coronavirus vaccines across the world are in various stages of candidate development. The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that scientists predict that the world may get the coronavirus vaccine a year or so ago. He has also spoken of the importance of international cooperation in developing, manufacturing and distributing the vaccine.

Trial on new vaccine humans has begun in London. The vaccine, developed by Imperial College London, will be administered to about 300 people in the coming weeks. In animal testing, the vaccine has been found to be safe and has been successful in developing effective immunity. Oxford University has also started human trials. There are about 120 vaccine programs in operation in the world.
