Onion prices are running at Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kilogram in many cities of the country.
Kerala's Pinarayi Vijayan government intervened to control the skyrocketing prices of onions during the festive season, under which the first consignment of 27 tonnes of onion procured from NAFED arrived from Nashik in Maharashtra on Friday. In Kerala, onion prices rose from Rs 90 to Rs 100 per kilogram last week, while onions at retail outlets at several places were at Rs 120 per kg.
The state government has decided to procure 100 tonnes of onion from NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation) this month. Kerala Agriculture Minister V S Sunil Kumar said that the first consignment of onion has reached Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam Kozhikode on Friday morning. The onion will be transported to consumers through Kerala Horticulture Products Development Corporation (Hortcorp). Hortcorp is estimated to sell onions at Rs 45 to Rs 50 per kilogram through its outlets.
