New Delhi: The Indian hockey team has withdrawn from next year's Commonwealth Games in the United Kingdom (UK). The decision was taken by the Indian men's and women's hockey teams due to the increasing cases of corona in the UK and the serious situation there. A statement was issued by Hockey India on Tuesday. It says that England is the most affected country with corona across Europe, so it would not be appropriate to participate in the Commonwealth Games there next year.

Team India's decision comes at a time when England have made 10-day quarantine mandatory for Indians.  Hockey India has clarified that its team's focus is entirely on the Asian Games, which is important given the preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Commonwealth Games will be played in the UK from July 28 to August 8 next year, while the Asian Games will be played in China shortly after September.

India's decision is also significant because England withdrew from the Junior Hockey World Cup in Odisha, India, next month, this Monday. England had also cited that the Government of India has set a 10-day quarantine period for the people of England, withdrawing their names. Now within 48 hours of the England junior team's decision, India has taken a big step.
