New Delhi: The Indian Navy has apprised the government of the need to build six nuclear powered submarines (SSN) to curb China's ever-increasing aggression in the Indo-Pacific region and to meet challenges at sea. After the Joint Commanders' Conference at Kevadia in Gujarat on March 4 this year, Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh had briefed PM Narendra Modi about the need while referring to the Indian Navy's Operation Samudra Setu II on May 3.

Experts say India is ready to counter the strength of the Chinese Navy. They says the SSN plan should also be seen as a concrete step by the Indian Navy to counter the growing strength of the Chinese Navy. The strength of the Chinese Navy is constantly increasing. China has overtaken the US Navy in terms of warship ship strength, though the US is still far ahead of China in terms of capacity and tonnage. India, which is currently leased from Russia in submarines, has only one Akula class SSN and one is likely to come on lease before 2025.

SSN is essential for long-range patrolling with food supplies and other logistics as well as weapons and missiles. So far, India has an Akula category SSN, which has been leased from Russia.
