Guntur: On September 13, 2024, the Indian Navy inaugurated the Kalvari Submarine Escape Training Facility, known as 'Vinetra,' at INS Satavahana in Visakhapatnam. The facility was commissioned by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command.

Vinetra has been developed in line with India's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, reflecting a significant stride towards self-reliance in defense capabilities. The facility, constructed by M/s L&T Defence as a turnkey project, features a five-meter escape tower and an adjacent diving basin. It is designed to provide both basic and refresher training for the crew of Kalvari-class submarines, ensuring their preparedness for emergency escape situations.

The Indian Navy’s official social media channels shared a video showcasing the functionality of Vinetra. The Navy emphasized that the facility’s commissioning underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance and enhanced defense capabilities.

Named 'Vinetra' (विनेत्र), meaning "Trainer," the facility represents a major advancement in submarine safety and operational readiness. It aims to build confidence among submariners by equipping them with the essential skills needed for effective escape in underwater emergencies. Vinetra strengthens the Navy's safety protocols and training infrastructure, further reinforcing its focus on operational preparedness.

The Kalvari-class submarines, a series of diesel-electric attack submarines, form a crucial part of India’s underwater warfare strategy. Based on the Scorpène-class submarines designed by the French shipbuilder Naval Group, these vessels are constructed through a joint venture between Naval Group and Mazagon Dock Limited. They are designed for a variety of missions, including anti-ship warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and area surveillance.
