New Delhi: Indian Railways usually make headlines often due to their losses and poor service. But after a long time, there has been a good storm for the railways. Railways have earned money from instant ticket bookings. Railways have earned an additional Rs 25 thousand crores from this in four years. The Tatkal quota was introduced in 1997. Its purpose was to provide reservation opportunity to the passengers who decided to travel at the last moment. It started with some selected trains.

Later in 2004, the facility was expanded to all Mail Express trains. Railways earned a total of Rs 21,530 crore from Instant Reservation tickets during the four years from 2016 to 2019. Apart from this, the Railways also earned an additional Rs 3862 crore from instant premium tickets. Instant Reservation tickets are charged at the rate of 10 per cent of basic fare in case of the second class, and 30 per cent of basic fare in case of other classes.

But there are minimum and maximum limits of this fee. The premium version of Instant reservation was launched in 2014 in some selected trains. Under this, fifty per cent of the Instant reservation tickets is sold on the basis of the dynamic fare system. In the year 2016-17, the Railways received an income of Rs 6672 crore from the sale of Instant tickets. In the next year i.e. 2017-18, it increased to Rs 6915 crore. Explain that Indian Railways has been running in deficit for a long time.
