Indian Railways is on the cusp of unveiling an innovative train tailored to meet the needs of the everyday traveler, with its debut scheduled for the end of October. This project, currently under development at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, encompasses a comprehensive revamp of second-class 3-tier sleeper coaches and second-class unreserved coaches. While the train's official name, comprising 22 coaches, remains undecided, it is anticipated to incorporate certain features reminiscent of the acclaimed Vande Bharat Express.

Distinguishing itself from the self-propelled Vande Bharat Express, this new train will operate through the push-pull method typical to Indian Railways, employing two locomotives, one stationed at each end of the train. Impressively, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works is in the process of crafting two WAP5 locomotives, notable for their aerodynamic design, to power this innovative train.

Here's a breakdown of the forthcoming train's key features:

General Second Class coaches: 8
Non-AC sleeper coaches: 12
Luggage-cum-guard vans: 2
Total coaches: 22

According to reliable sources, the development work on this upgraded sleeper train, which offers various passenger amenities, is progressing smoothly. The target date for its completion at the ICF end is set for the middle of October.

Moreover, a distinct iteration of the train is in the pipeline. It's reported that the prototype of this new train is poised to make its debut by the close of the current year. Indian Railways is considering introducing this fresh variant of the Vande Bharat Express within the fiscal year 2023–2024. The forthcoming sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express will comprise 16 coaches, featuring 11 AC 3-Tier coaches, 4 AC Two-Tier coaches, and one First AC.

This initiative echoes Indian Railways' commitment to enhancing the travel experience for passengers. Back in 2017, they launched the Antyodaya Express, a series of trains designed for unreserved travel, accompanied by an array of upgraded passenger amenities. The name "Antyodaya" itself conveys the railways' mission to uplift and cater to the needs of the most marginalized sections of society.
