Indian Rupee falls 6 paise to 76.25 against US dollar

The Indian rupee on Monday fell 6 paise to 76.25 against the US dollar, mirroring the greenback's strength overseas and rising crude oil prices.

The rupee opened lower against the dollar in the interbank foreign exchange market, at 76.41, and ended the day at 76.25, down 6 paise from its previous close. The rupee hit an intraday high of 76.20 and a low of 76.43 during the trading session.

On the last trading day, the rupee fell 4 paise to settle at 76.19 versus the US dollar. The Forex market was closed on Thursday and Friday for Mahavir Jayanti and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti, as well as Good Friday.

In the meantime, the dollar index, which measures the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies, was up 0.20 percent at 100.70. Brent crude prices lost 0.18 percent to USD 111.50 per barrel, the global benchmark.

On equity, the 30-share BSE Sensex sank 1,172.19 points, or 2.01%, to 57,166.74, while the NSE Nifty dropped 302.00 points, or 1.73 percent, to 17,173.65. According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Wednesday, offloading shares worth Rs 2,061.04 crore.
