Indian-origin cop Neil Basu in short-list to be Scotland Yard chief

Neil Basu,  a Indian origin British police officer of, is widely rumoured in political and media circles to be on a shortlist of candidates for the next London Metropolitan Police Commissioner or Scotland Yard Chief. However, his candour may have rubbed Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Priti Patel the wrong way in the past.

The post of London Police Commissioner became vacant on Thursday when Cressida Dick resigned after London Mayor Sadiq Khan lost all confidence in her. Dick was the first woman to hold the role. Anil Kanti 'Neil' Basu, 53, assistant commissioner rank, is the son of an Indian medical father from Kolkata and a Welsh mother. He has been a rising star at the Yard for some time, a highly ranked officer. He joined the Met Police in 1992 as chief of counter-terrorism and specialised operations before becoming director of the College of Policing. He holds an economics degree from Nottingham University.

In a profile of him published in the Mail on Sunday, he is characterized as "well-liked inside the force and by intelligence experts at MI5 (Britain's internal intelligence collection agency)". At the time, the UK was in serious risk of exiting the European Union (EU) without a deal, which it ultimately averted, but not without a tense relationship.
