NEW DELHI: V.A. Shiva Ayyadurai, an Indian-American who "invented email" at the age of 14, has expressed interest in taking up the position of Twitter CEO after Elon Musk announced his intention to resign from the post.

Mumbai-born Ayyadurai, 59, applied for the role on Twitter. He has four degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), including a PhD in biological engineering.

"The CEO role at Twitter piques my attention. I have seven prosperous high-tech software enterprises and four MIT degrees. Please let me know how to apply "Musk was the target of a tweet from Ayyadurai.

Ayyadurai's tweet attracted attention, with many users coming up with responses ranging from encouraging to sarcastic.

In 1978, Ayyadurai developed a computer software he termed "email." It replicated all the functions of the interoffice mail system: Inbox, Outbox, Folders, Memo, Attachments, Address Book, etc.

He was formally acknowledged as the creator of email when the US government granted him the first Copyright for Email in 1982.

After losing his own poll on whether or not to step down as Twitter CEO, a report earlier this week claimed that Musk is actively looking for a replacement.

A staggering 57.5% of respondents to his poll indicated a desire for him to step down from his position as CEO of the microblogging network.

The billionaire then declared that he will step down as Twitter's CEO if he finds someone "foolish enough to take the position."
