India’s 15 cities listed as the world’s warmest place; MP is in Top list

New Delhi: On Friday, several Indian cities were reeling under intense heatwave. All 15 cities listed as the world's warmest by the El Dorado weather website were from Central India and surrounding areas. The top spot was taken by Khargone in Madhya Pradesh with 46.6 degree Celsius temperature. Meanwhile, several parts of Maharashtra's Vidarbha region also recorded high temperatures, the maximum temperature was recorded from Akola on Friday at 46.4 degree Celsius, a regional meteorological department official said.

Nine of the 15 cities were from Maharashtra, three from Madhya Pradesh, two from Uttar Pradesh and one from Telangana. An official told news agency PTI that the heatwave is expected to continue for another five days. Akola's high temperatures were followed by Bramhapuri at 45.8 degree Celsius, Wardha at 45.7 degree Celsius, Chandrapur at 45.6 degree Celsius, Amravati recorded 45.4 degree Celsius, Nagpur 45.2, Yavatmal 44.5, Washim 44.2, Gondia 43.8, Gadchiroli 43.2 and Buldhana 43.1 degree Celsius. According to a report in the Times of India(TOI), at 45.2 Nagpur was ninth hottest in the world. A regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) told TOI that the temperature was nearly three degrees above normal.

Extreme temperatures are affecting the flora and fauna, wildlife NGO Habitat Conservation Society of Chandrapur told  TOI that at least nine birds had died due to excessive heat at Gojra pond which is located 15 km from the city. The president blamed the presence of a large number of coal mines, power plants, and other industries for high temperature in the area. Meanwhile, the department has issued a severe heatwave warning for the next five days in various districts across Vidarbha. The maximum temperature in many districts is expected to be 45-47 degree Celsius. However, IMD had declared 2018 as the hottest year since 1901.
