New Delhi: Geeta Gopinath is back in the news. He is the chief economist of the Indian-American International Monetary Fund (IMF). Geeta will replace Geoffrey Okamoto next month and become the first deputy managing director. Geeta Gopinath will be the place after IMF chief Christina Georgieva. That is, Geeta Gopinath has now become boss No. 2 in IMF.
In 2018, Geeta became the second Indian to become the chief economist of the IMF after former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan. She had earlier served as John Zonstra Professor of International Studies and Economy at Harvard University. Christine Lagarde, former managing director of IMF, described Geeta as one of the best economists in the world. Geeta PhD economy from Princeton University in 2001 after studying MA from both Washington University and Delhi School of Economics.
He has also holds an undergraduate degree in arts programme from Delhi University. After completing her PhD, Geeta served as an assistant professor at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. She arrived at Harvard in 2005 and later became a professor at the Ivy-League Institute in 2010. Geeta was born in Kolkata, but after a few years her family came to Mysore. Geeta's father wanted him to do engineering or go to the medical field, but Geeta chose the path of economics. Geeta wanted to come back to India in 2001, but her mentors explained to her. Since then, Geeta has been in the US, but because of her family, she has been visiting India.
