India's leading public policy think tank, NITI Aayog, on Monday released a comprehensive perspective titled "India's Booming Gig and Platform Economy" that provided detailed viewpoints and suggestions on the "gig" (a job that lasts a specified period of time) economy in India. Those who work on an on-call, contract, temporary, or freelance basis are often considered gig workers.

The report was unveiled by Suman Bery, vice chairman of NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant, and K Rajeswara Rao, special secretary. The research offered a comprehensive methodical approach to calculate the sector's existing size and potential for employment creation.

Besides, it showcased international best practices on social security programme initiatives and emphasised the prospects and challenges of this developing industry. Being a new-age phenomenon, platform work has a range of undiscovered features. This study tried to fill these information gaps by constructing its framework around four essential pillars: data, job creation, comparison, and learning from global peers, as well as suggestions for governmental interventions.

"This report will become a significant knowledge resource in understanding the potential of the industry and inspire additional research and analysis on gig and platform work," NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman Bery said in remarks made at the event. According to estimates, 77 lakh workers participated in the gig economy in 2020–21. They made up 1.5% of India's overall labour force, or 2.6% of the non-agricultural workforce.
