NEW DELHI: One of the most significant economic revolutions in recent memory, India is set to have a 9–11 million job increase in the gig economy by 2025, according to a report released on Wednesday.
Door delivery is the gig role that employers are now hiring for most frequently, with 22% for food and 26% for other deliveries.
According to the latest data from job site Indeed, 16% of the employers surveyed are hiring gig workers for household/vehicle repairs and maintenance and for cab/2-wheeler driving, 10% are hiring for cleaning, and 7% for personal care service roles.
Gig workers are independent contractors or freelancers who often work for a number of clients on a temporary basis. Project-based, hourly, or part-time work are all possible for them.
"There has been some formalisation in this industry with the rise of app-based models for jobs like delivery and home services. We expect this market sector to grow rapidly over the next few years, "said Sashi Kumar, Indeed India's Head of Sales.
The study also revealed that for workers who have moved away from their hometown for work, the largest obstacles are a lack of access to job information (62%), a lack of proficiency in English (32%), and a lack of familiarity with the local tongue ( 10%).
The survey revealed that 14% of respondents from the gig labour reported being unaware of the skills and competencies required for their jobs as a result of language barriers.
From an employer point of view, the top 3 challenges faced in hiring for gig job roles are resume and interviewing skills (52%) and poor awareness of required skills and abilities (51%) on the part of jobseekers, and the screening and assessing of jobseekers (37%).
Nearly three out of five gig workers (59 %) find their jobs uncomfortable (46 %), if not hard and risky (13 %).
