India’s non-basmati rice exports seen an astounding growth of 109 pc, says Piyush Goyal

Non-basmati rice exports in India have climbed by 109 percent, from USD2,925 million in fiscal year 2013-14 to USD6,115 million in fiscal year 2021-22.

 

Piyush Goyal, Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Textiles, India’s non-basmati rice exports have witnessed an astounding growth of 109 percent on the achievement, saying that the Modi government's policies enabled farmers gain access to global markets while also ensuring food security.

India sold rice to over 150 countries in 2021-22, according to data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS). Out of the 150 nations reported in 2021-22, India shipped more than USD1 million to 76, indicating the diversification of India's rice exports throughout time.

India exported non-basmati rice worth USD2,015 million in 2019-20, rising to USD4,799 million in 2020-21 and USD6,115 million in 2021-22, according to DGCIS data. Non-basmati rice, at USD6,115 million, was the leading FX earner among all agri-commodities in 2021-22, with a 27 percent increase in exports.

According to the Commerce Ministry, the large growth in agri-exports demonstrates the government's determination to raise farmers' income by increasing exports of agricultural and processed food items from the country.

West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Assam, and Haryana are the key rice-producing states. Benin, a West African country, is a major importer of Indian non-basmati rice.
