Cars in Europe, America, and Japan are on the brink of a technological shift as chips from Assam and Gujarat are set to power them, announces Ashwini Vaishnaw.
In a landmark development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded 'India's Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat' and initiated the commencement of three semiconductor projects, collectively valued at approximately Rs 1.25 lakh crore. Through a virtual interface on Wednesday, the Prime Minister laid the cornerstone for these endeavors. Notably, Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) is slated to establish the semiconductor fabrication facility within the Dholera Special Investment Region under the revised initiative for erecting "Semiconductor Fabs" in India. This pioneering endeavor, entailing an investment exceeding Rs 91,000 crore, will mark the inception of the country's inaugural commercial semiconductor fab.
Outlined below are key highlights concerning the three semiconductor facilities, to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister on March 13:
The Dholera facility is a collaborative venture between Tata Electronics Pvt Ltd (TEPL) and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC). It is geared towards manufacturing high-performance computing chips utilizing 28 nm technology, along with power management chips crucial for applications in electric vehicles, telecom, defense, automotive, consumer electronics, display, and power electronics.
The Sanand plant, established by CG Power in collaboration with Japan’s Renesas Electronics Corporation and Thailand’s Stars Microelectronics, will be dedicated to assembly, testing, marking, and packaging (ATMP) of specialized chips. With a daily capacity of 15 million, it is poised to significantly enhance chip production.
The Morigaon unit, to be set up by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT), will cater to various sectors including automobiles, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and mobile phones. This facility, with a daily capacity of 48 million, is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting the burgeoning demand for semiconductor components.
This ambitious endeavor signifies a monumental leap forward for India's semiconductor industry, heralding a new era of technological prowess and self-sufficiency. As these facilities come online, the world can anticipate a transformative impact on various sectors, underscoring India's emergence as a global hub for cutting-edge chip manufacturing.
