New Delhi: India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delivered a keynote address at the third convocation of the National Defense University, emphasizing the evolution of India's approach towards terrorism. Jaishankar noted that the Indian people have moved beyond the mentality of "turning the other cheek" and stressed the need for the country to compete effectively in the face of ongoing challenges, particularly cross-border terrorism.

Addressing the audience at the National Defense University in Lawad, Gandhi Nagar, Jaishankar highlighted that India has confronted terrorism since its independence, with attackers from Pakistan targeting Kashmir immediately after the nation gained freedom. He pointed to the Mumbai attacks in 2008 as a turning point that shifted the mindset of the country.

"Now the first thing we need to do is that we need to compete. I know people who said, 'Oh, we had a very smart strategy to turn the other cheek.' I don't think this is the mood of the country now. I don't think it makes any sense. I don't think it makes any strategic sense. If someone is engaging in cross-border terrorism, you should respond to it. They should pay the price for this," stated External Affairs Minister Jaishankar.

Commenting on recent terrorist attacks in Kashmir where five soldiers were martyred, Jaishankar asserted that terrorism has long been a challenge for India, emphasizing the necessity for swift responses and ensuring that those responsible face consequences.

Jaishankar emphasized the complexities of countering terrorism, stating, "Countering terrorism challenges both our capabilities and our imaginations. As our interests expand, we must also strive to contribute to the security of others. It could be in the immediate neighborhood or in terms of financial, health, and energy support for them, or it could be for a larger region like the Global South."
