External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hailed the launching of the India-Sri Lanka ferry service as a momentous leap in fostering people-to-people connections. During a virtual ceremony on October 14, he underscored New Delhi's visionary and generous approach to its neighboring nations, with an emphasis on enhancing connectivity, collaboration, and interpersonal ties.

He emphasized the prospect of establishing a grid connection, pipeline infrastructure, and an economic corridor in the future. He also pledged unwavering support for all residents of Sri Lanka to live with equal dignity and rights, a significant nod to the aspirations of the Tamil community.

India has consistently urged Colombo to fulfill the legitimate desires of the Tamil population in Sri Lanka and guarantee their right to a life characterized by respect and honor. The launch of the ferry service materialized as a result of an announcement by the leaders of both nations in July, signifying a pivotal advancement in fostering people-to-people interactions between India and Sri Lanka.

Operated by the Shipping Corporation of India, the high-speed ferry can accommodate up to 150 passengers. It will traverse the distance of approximately 60 nautical miles (about 110 kilometers) between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai in roughly 3.5 hours, contingent on sea conditions, according to official sources.

Jaishankar also spotlighted India's 'Neighbourhood First policy' and its commitment to enhancing connectivity and collaboration with neighboring countries. He cited the Chennai-Jaffna flights sanctioned by Prime Minister Modi as a visible embodiment of this approach.

Prime Minister Modi holds the distinction of being the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Jaffna, a testament to his commitment. This dedication is further evident in India's support for housing initiatives, cultural centers, and healthcare facilities in Sri Lanka.

Jaishankar additionally referenced India's SAGAR policy (Security and Growth For All in the Region), highlighting India's proactive role in upholding maritime security, disaster response, and environmental protection. The ferry represents a crucial means of fostering people-to-people connections through the maritime domain, also underscoring India's support for the efficient operation of the Kankesanthurai harbor.

The minister stressed India's commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens, emphasizing the importance of steps like the ferry service, improved air connectivity, streamlined visa procedures, and enhanced tourism prospects. Finally, he commended the Modi government's commitment to facilitating business operations, asserting that the ferry service would directly benefit cargo services and offer significant assistance to small businesses, ensuring that its advantages extend to those who might otherwise be marginalized.
