After Kharif, no hope of good production in Rabi season

Pulses are not expected to produce good crops in the current Rabi season. Already, pulses yield is expected to decrease in the last Kharif season. Due to this, inflation of pulses may disturb consumers. After the initial slowing in the current Rabi season, wheat sowing has now gained momentum. But the area under sowing of pulses and oilseeds is not likely to increase now. During the Kharif season, heavy monsoon rains in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka, the pulses-rich states, destroyed these crops standing in the field. With this, the yield of pulses is estimated to be 82.3 lakh tonnes, while the Agriculture Ministry had set a target of 101.1 million tonnes. Similarly, domestic production of oilseed crops is very low anyway, which may decrease further this time. This will shock the government's intention to increase the production of oilseed crops.

Play began late wheat sowing in rabi season but now has gained sowing speed. According to the data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, till last week, the wheat sowing area has reached 15 million hectares, which is nine and a half million hectares more than the same period last year. At the same time, the area under sowing of pulp crops considered to be politically sensitive is still about 10 lakh hectares less than last year's 99.15 lakh hectares. However, sowing continues sporadically.

Normally, during the Rabi season, the total pulses cultivation is in 1.46 crore hectares. So far, the area under sowing of gram has been 61.59 lakh hectare as compared to 68.40 lakh hectare last year. By the end of the season, the average area under gram is 93.53 lakh hectares. The share of gram dal in domestic pulses is more than 40 percent. Other pulses crops also do not have very satisfactory indications. The government will have to devise an effective strategy for this so that the domestic demand for pulses can be met. In fact, the absence of good monsoon rains increases the area and production of both these crops. This time heavy rains spoiled the standing Kharif crops earlier and now the sowing area is expected to decrease in Rabi.
