Initially, most of our purchases were based on the advertisements we used to see between TV shows, the page-long ads in newspapers, and those glossy pages in the magazine. And every time a celebrity was brought on board to endorse a product, the sales of that item would skyrocket to profits. But gone are those days. Traditional methods of marketing have now been replaced by different forms of marketing including the use of social media platforms.

Whether it's Instagram or Facebook, leading companies have chosen to make influencers and 'normal people' the face of their brand apart from celebrities. Whether it's giving an honest review or talking about the pros and cons of a product, there's no filtering used to market a product on social media.

Social media influencer Roopal Shah, who boasts of having more than 55K followers on the gram has carved a niche for herself and her fashion tips are always on-fleek. Whether it's product placement or social media marketing, Roopal has seen it all. "People want to only know whether the product is worth their money or not. Why would you want to spend on a product and have a miserable experience? That's the difference between traditional marketing and social media marketing. As influencers, we first try everything out ourselves and only then share it with our followers," says Roopal.

Social media marketing doesn't just have to be what an influencer promotes, it can also be the ads that you see between Instagram stories or posts on Facebook. When you look for a product, your data gets synced and the search engine shows you ads based on your previous search, but with more variety. This process makes the process of shopping easier for a consumer.

"With traditional methods, there were only a few options. But now we've been learning of products and brands that we've never even heard of. That's the beauty of this game," Roopal concludes. Moreover, the Surat-based fashion influencer has helped many small scale brands build its presence not only on the digital medium but also all over the country.
