The Centre established a Mobile COVID-19 test facility for North-East India on Thursday which is first of its kind Mobile Diagnostic Laboratory (I-LAB).

The mobile lab is equipped with biosafety features and can perform both RT-PCR and ELISA tests. It can also be used to screen for other infectious illnesses such as tuberculosis and HIV, therefore it will be useful even after COVID-19. Because of the region's unique climatic and topographical conditions, the mobile lab technology will be gradually introduced in other North-East states.

It was developed with the help of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology of India, and is intended to provide COVID-19 testing to rural and isolated portions of the North-East, according to a press statement from the Ministry. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, unveiled the mobile testing facility, with Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Zoramthanga participating in the online ceremony.

Singh, who expressed confidence that India will win over the present epidemic, suggested that the I-LAB be connected to a teleconsultation facility based on the disease profile of the Northeastern region's population.
