The name of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, has been included prominently in the celebrities who have contributed to the liberation of the country on 15 August 1947. Mahatma Gandhi spent his life in the independence of the country but when the country became independent, Gandhi could not become a part of its celebration. Pandit Nehru and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel wrote letters to Gandhiji with reference to the independence of the country, but his reply shocked everyone.

When the country became independent, Mahatma Gandhi was not present in Delhi, but he was present in Noakhali, West Bengal, thousands of kilometers away from Delhi. He was on a hunger strike to stop communal violence. The date of August 15 was fixed for the independence of the country and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru-Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel sent a letter to Gandhi for this. In which it was written, 'You are the father of the nation and you should give your blessings by joining the first celebration of independence.'

Mahatma Gandhi replied to the letter of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel and his answer caused silence all over. Gandhi wrote in response, "When Hindus and Muslims are killing each other in Kolkata, how can I come to celebrate in such a situation. I will give my life to stop the riots." For this reason Mahatma Gandhi could not be a part of the first celebration of independence.
