The International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPWD), recognised by the UN, is observed globally on December 3.

Since 1992, the United Nations has supported International Disability Day, also known as the International Day of People with Disabilities. International Disability Day seeks to increase awareness of the rights, dignity, and welfare of persons with disabilities while also promoting a greater understanding of those who are affected by a disability.

The day aims to spread knowledge about the advantages of include people with disabilities in all spheres of life, including the political, social, and cultural ones. International Disability Day embraces all known disorders, from Autism to Down syndrome to Multiple Sclerosis, and is not just focused on mental or physical impairments.

Learn about International Disability Day: We should all consider how we might build an inclusive society that meets the needs of everyone on International Disability Day. Did you know that 15% of people worldwide experience some sort of disability? This represents over a billion people! That is a significant sum. Even while we have made significant progress in terms of accessibility and making sure that persons with disabilities may lead as fulfilling a life as possible, more has to be done. On this day, we are urged to consider how we can build a community that is welcoming to all.

We have the ideal chance on this day to increase our understanding of and sensitivity to disability. There are 21 different categories in which impairments might be categorised. This covers a variety of conditions, such as mental illness, intellectual difficulties, hearing loss, blindness, and more. It is beneficial to educate ourselves about these ailments so that we can support anyone who is dealing with a disability.

When we talk about building an inclusive society, we don't just mean making sure that individuals with disabilities can travel easily and go anywhere they want; we also mean accessibility in terms of being able to have access to various employment. There are many ways that we can all contribute to this and aid.

History of International Disability Day:When the United Nations General Assembly decided to declare 1981 the International Year of Disabled Persons, everything got underway.

The five years between that decision and the actual Year of Disabled Persons were spent thinking about the difficulties faced by the disabled, how to equalise their opportunities, and how to make sure they participate fully in community life while enjoying all the rights and benefits non-disabled citizens enjoy.

Another topic discussed was how global governments could work to prevent disabilities from ever coming into contact with individuals, as much of the discussion focused on the viruses and other illnesses that cause different types of disabilities.

The years 1983 to 1992 were designated as the United Nations Decade of Impaired Persons, and it was during this period that all previously developed ideas were put into practise to better the lives of disabled people around the world.

Every year when the day is observed, a different area of enhancing the lives of those who live with disabilities is highlighted. For instance, the year's topic in 2007 was "Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities."
