International Literacy Day is celebrated every year on 8 September to spread awareness of education and literacy in the world. But do you know when and why this day was finally started and since when it is being celebrated? History of International Literacy Day: On November 7, 1965, UNESCO slammed the world for celebrating the importance of education and literacy around the world that 8th September will be celebrated as International Literacy Day all over the world. This day was celebrated for the first time since 1966 and since then till today 8 September is celebrated as International Literacy Day.

How much literacy is there in the world: According to the report of the World Education Monitoring Board, one out of every five men is illiterate, as well as two-thirds of the world's women are illiterate. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are the countries with the lowest literacy rate.

How is the condition in India : The literacy rate in India is much lower than the world literacy rate. The literacy rate in India in 2011 was 75.06, which is quite less that of world literacy rate of 84% at that time.
