August 12 marks the annual celebration of International Youth Day as an awareness day, designated by the United Nations (UN). The first International Youth Day was observed in 1999 after the UN General Assembly (UNGA) passed a resolution accepting the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon.

The theme for this year’s International Youth Day is "intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages”. The purpose is to amplify the message that action is needed from all generations to achieve Agenda 2030 and its 17 SDGs and leave no one behind. It is important to highlight that this International Youth Day 2022 aims to raise awareness about certain barriers to intergenerational solidarity, in particular age discrimination, which affects people young and old, at the same time that it has detrimental effects on society as a whole, per UNESCO.

Today's generation of youth is the largest in history, with more than three billion young people under the age of 30. Being half of the world's inhabitants, a healthy youth generation has an unmatched potential to contribute to the betterment of our society.

On International Youth Day, workshops, concerts, conferences, cultural events, seminars and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organisations take place around the world. The theme and slogan for this day also change every year to cover a range of issues that affect young people today.

It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide. During IYD, concerts, workshops, cultural events, and meetings involving national and local government officials and youth organizations take place around the world. IYD was designated by the United Nations in 1999 with the adoption of Resolution 54/120.

The day is celebrated to give opportunities to celebrate the voice, actions, and initiatives of young people around the world. It was recommended by the  World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon around 8-12 August 1998 that 12 August gets declared as an International Youth Day. The first day was celebrated in the year 1999. This day is important as it brings to attention the youth issues and celebrates the potential of youth as partners in today’s society.
