NGT directs Punjab Forest dept to conduct probe into death of 400 parrots

Instructions have been issued to punjab forest department in connection with the death of about 400 parrots in Faridkot. NGT directed the forest department to conduct a thorough inquiry into the case and ascertain the cause of death. A bench headed by National Green Tribunal Chairman Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel has ordered the Chief Wildlife Warden of Punjab to coordinate with the environment department and take action in the case.

The NGT gave direction while hearing a petition filed by tribunal advocate HC Arora. Aroda had requested for directions to probe the sudden death of hundreds of parrots in the deputy commissioner's office premises in Faridkot. The petition said that the cause of death is spraying of chemicals.

At the same time, the petition further stated that parrot deaths have been taking place every year since 2017, which has also been reported in the media but no appropriate action was taken by the department. On the other hand, the bench said, it is difficult to draw clearconclusions from the material on record as to why parrots are dying. However, such a large figure needs to look into the causes of bird death. The bench said, "We in coordination with the Environment Department or any other expert order the Chief Wildlife Warden of Punjab to look into the case and take action on it.
